The 2026 World Cup set a new daily attendance record on Tuesday, with 281,223 spectators present in the stadiums for the four matches played, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced.

This total surpasses the previous record of 277,070 spectators recorded on June 28, 1994, during the World Cup held in the United States, where four matches were also on the schedule.

"The France-Senegal, Iraq-Norway, Argentina-Algeria, and Austria-Jordan matches drew significant crowds, confirming the enthusiasm generated by this edition jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico," the international body indicated in a press release published on its official website.

After only six days of competition, 1,309,652 fans have already attended the first 20 matches, representing an average of 65,483 spectators per match.

According to FIFA, the tournament is on track to break the competition's historic cumulative attendance record, set during the 1994 edition with approximately 3.5 million spectators, and could surpass this mark by the end of the group stage.

"Wow! 281,223 fans were present today (Tuesday) in the FIFA World Cup stadiums: it is the highest attendance ever recorded in the history of the competition!" celebrated FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

"June 16, 2026, will remain etched in World Cup history. I cannot thank our fans enough for bringing color, atmosphere, and emotion to this tournament. The 2026 World Cup, the most inclusive to date, continues to show how much our sport is loved and how football unites the world," he added.

The world football governing body noted that the revenues generated by the World Cup are reinvested into the development of men's, women's, and youth football within its 211 member associations.
