The Algerian national football team is preparing to face a major challenge for its debut in the 2026 World Cup (June 11 – July 19). The "Greens" will take on world champions Argentina next Wednesday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (2:00 AM Algerian time) for the first matchday of Group J.
Returning to the world’s most prestigious football stage after missing the 2018 edition in Russia and 2022 in Qatar, the Algerian selection enters this fixture with the ambition of making a successful start and leaving a lasting impression, despite the difficulty of the task awaiting them against one of the best teams on the planet.
Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s men, however, intend to defy all odds. Driven by a generation determined to write a new chapter in Algerian football history, captain Riyad Mahrez and his teammates want to prove they have the resources to compete with the giants of the game, as they did during their 1-0 friendly victory over the Netherlands on June 3 in Rotterdam.
Regarding the squad, concerns primarily center on defender Ramy Bensebaini. Although he suffered a right ankle injury, the defender returned to collective training on Friday during a session held at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence. His participation in the clash against Argentina remains uncertain and is expected to be a game-time decision.
Aware of the magnitude of the challenge, the Algerians can count on significant support in the stands. As with all major international events, several thousand Algerian supporters are expected at Arrowhead Stadium to push their team and create what promises to be an exceptional atmosphere.
Argentina, led by its emblematic captain Lionel Messi, enters this opening match as the favorite. The Albiceleste, which recently reclaimed the top spot in the FIFA World Rankings, is currently on a seven-match winning streak and harbors great ambitions to defend the world title it won in Qatar in 2022 against France (3-3, 4-2 on penalties).
While the task appears daunting, some uncertainties linger within the Argentine ranks. Albiceleste coach Lionel Scaloni will have to manage without left-back Nicolas Tagliafico, who is officially ruled out for this inaugural match. Meanwhile, starting goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez remains highly uncertain due to a hand injury, which could be a significant blow for the South American side.
The FIFA Refereeing Commission has entrusted this high-profile match to a Polish officiating trio led by Szymon Marciniak, assisted by his compatriots Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik. New Zealander Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh will serve as the fourth official, while his compatriot Isaac Trevis has been designated as the reserve assistant referee.
In the other Group J match, Austria and Jordan will face off on Wednesday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara (5:00 AM Algerian time).
