The Algerian national senior men's tennis team defeated Angola 2-0 on Saturday in Nairobi, Kenya, during the playoffs (title round) of the Davis Cup (Group IV - Africa Zone), securing their promotion to Africa Group III for the year 2027.
The Algerian team started strong with Samir Hamza Reguig defeating his Angolan opponent, Emerson Pedro, in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).
Toufik Sahtali further solidified Algeria's lead by winning his match against Daniel Domingos (6-2, 6-2), confirming the national team's victory and clinching the overall tie in favor of Algeria.
The Algerian team enjoyed a flawless run during the first round in Group A, achieving a perfect record with three wins in three matches. After defeating the host nation, Kenya (2-1), they overcame Ghana (2-1) before sweeping Botswana (3-0).
Meanwhile, Ghana secured the second promotion spot after a surprise 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe, who were strong favorites for promotion. On the other hand, Mozambique and the République Démocratique du Congo were relegated to Group V after losing to Kenya (0-3) and Botswana (0-2), respectively.
Algeria was represented in this continental competition by Toufik Sahtali, Samir Hamza Reguig, and Mohamed Nazim Makhlouf.
The national team was led by Captain Abdelhak Hamerlane, while the Algerian delegation was headed by Mr. Yacine Oulhaci, Vice-President of the Algerian Tennis Federation.
Eight teams participated in this edition and were divided into two groups of four. Group A included Algérie, Kenya, Botswana, and Ghana, while Group B consisted of Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, and the République Démocratique du Congo.
According to the competition format, the winners and runners-up of each group qualified for the playoffs to compete for the two promotion spots to Group III (Africa Zone) in 2027.
