Exploring Algerian-Nigerien Cooperation in the Fields of Environment and Biodiversity

The Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouther Krikou, received Colonel Maïzama Abdoulaye, the Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Environment of the Republic of Niger. The two officials reviewed the prospects of cooperation and partnership between the two countries in the fields of environment and biodiversity, according to a ministry statement.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, provided an opportunity to exchange views on environmental issues of mutual interest. It also explored avenues to strengthen bilateral cooperation through joint projects that address current environmental challenges, particularly in combating climate change and promoting the circular economy.

During the meeting, which comes as part of a visit by a Nigerien ministerial delegation to Algeria, the Minister highlighted prospects for cooperation with Niger, especially in combating desertification, drawing on Algeria's expertise.

In this regard, the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life addressed the rehabilitation project of the Green Dam. She noted that under the 2023 instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the initiative has been transformed into an ecological project par excellence, the statement added.

Ms. Krikou announced that the two parties are currently preparing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the environmental sector to enhance bilateral cooperation and share Algeria's experience in biodiversity.

For his part, the Nigerien Minister emphasized the importance of advancing cooperation with Algeria in the circular economy and waste management, seeking to benefit from Algerian expertise in this domain.

Highlighting the significant momentum recently characterizing Algerian-Nigerien relations, Mr. Maïzama affirmed that the MoU currently being drafted will provide greater impetus to bilateral environmental cooperation, the source concluded.
