Algeria and Niger Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Water Resources and Preparing a Joint Memorandum of Understanding

The Minister of Hydraulics, Lounès Bouzegza, held discussions on Tuesday in Algiers with the Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Environment of the Republic of Niger, Maïzama Abdoulaye, to explore ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of water resources and hydraulics, according to a ministry statement.

The same source clarified that the meeting, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Hydraulics, falls within the framework of strengthening bilateral and fraternal ties between the two nations. It also aligns with the directives of the leaders of both countries, aiming to expand areas of partnership and integration, particularly in priority sectors.

During the talks, the two parties reviewed mechanisms for developing joint cooperation in the hydraulics and water resources sector, in a manner that reflects the strong relations between the two countries and serves the goals of sustainable development.

The discussions also addressed the possibility of preparing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Algeria and Niger to boost cooperation in several areas. These include drinking water supply, improving water quality, developing agricultural irrigation, mobilizing water resources, sanitation, and the valorization of treated wastewater. Additionally, the MoU would cover the drilling of deep wells and the training and qualification of personnel in various hydraulics professions, leveraging Algeria's pioneering expertise in these fields.

In this context, both sides emphasized the importance of exchanging technical expertise and experiences in water resources management to support technical and institutional capacities and achieve sustainable development in both nations.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two parties renewed their shared commitment to enhancing coordination and bilateral partnership. They agreed to work towards implementing cooperation projects in the hydraulics and water resources sector, contributing to water security and promoting economic and social development in both Algeria and Niger, the statement concluded.
