Algeria and Côte d'Ivoire signed a cooperation agreement today, Tuesday, in Abidjan, focusing on the fields of energy and renewable energies. The agreement aims to strengthen the bilateral partnership and develop energy cooperation between the two countries, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies.
The governmental agreement, whose signing ceremony was co-chaired by the Minister of the sector, Mourad Adjal, and the Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy of Côte d'Ivoire, Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly, embodies both parties' commitment to developing a mutually beneficial energy partnership. It establishes the legal and institutional framework governing the cooperation activities and projects intended for implementation, according to the same source.
In a joint press statement, Mr. Adjal emphasized that this agreement constitutes a "decisive step" in strengthening and developing bilateral cooperation, noting that cooperation programs and practical projects will be launched to contribute to achieving development and bring benefits and prosperity to both fraternal countries.
After expressing his satisfaction with the outcomes of his working visit to Abidjan, the Minister explained that it falls within the "positive dynamism" witnessed in bilateral cooperation between the two countries in recent months. This is particularly true following the talks he conducted, during which it was agreed to identify partnership areas in energy and renewable energies and elevate them to serve development goals and achieve energy independence across the African continent.
For his part, Mr. Coulibaly described the existing cooperation between Algeria and Côte d'Ivoire as an "ideal model at the level of the African continent." He emphasized that this type of partnership is precisely what the continent needs to achieve its development and energy sovereignty, pointing out that his country considers Algeria the "best partner" in this field given the achievements it has realized in the energy sector.
He also highlighted the importance of cooperation between Algeria and Côte d'Ivoire within the framework of the African Petroleum Producers' Organization (APPO), whose General Secretariat is hosted by Algeria. This represents an opportunity, Mr. Coulibaly said, to strengthen joint efforts aimed at achieving energy sovereignty for the continent.
To achieve this goal, the Ivorian Minister added, it is essential to provide the necessary financial resources to invest in the research and exploitation of African natural wealth, highlighting in this context the role of the upcoming African Energy Bank project, which will be launched soon.
