Minister of Health Receives WHO Representative to Algeria

The Minister of Health, Mr. Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene, received at the ministry's headquarters the Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Algeria, Mr. Phanuel Habimana, to discuss several files, particularly bilateral cooperation for the 2026-2027 period and the national road safety strategy, according to a statement issued today, Thursday, by the ministry.

During this meeting, which took place yesterday, Wednesday, the two sides addressed a number of priority files, foremost among them "enhancing the national road safety strategy" by intensifying coordination and benefiting from the expertise provided by competent UN bodies, thereby contributing to reducing traffic accidents and mitigating their health, social, and economic impacts.

The two officials also reviewed the "cooperation strategy between Algeria and the UN organization for the 2026-2027 period" to ensure the alignment of cooperation programs with national health priorities, as well as "ways to strengthen Algeria's position as a regional hub for North Africa in the fields of health training and logistics."

In this context, the Minister of Health presented an overview of the "missions and role of the National School of Management and Health Administration" and the specialized training programs it provides, which have attracted the interest of many African countries seeking to benefit from its expertise. On this occasion, he extended an invitation to the representative of the World Health Organization to organize a field visit to the school to learn about its pedagogical capabilities and its role in training health executives.

In this regard, Mr. Ait Messaoudene, praised the "pioneering role played by the World Health Organization in accompanying countries and strengthening the capacities of health systems," emphasizing "Algeria's keenness to continue joint work in the areas of prevention, promoting public health, developing human resources, and upgrading the readiness of the health system to face various challenges in a way that serves the goals of sustainable health development."

For his part, the Representative of the World Health Organization praised the "distinguished level reached by the cooperation relations between the Organization and the health sector in Algeria," emphasizing that this partnership has become a "model for fruitful cooperation, which requires elevating it to higher levels by expanding its fields and strengthening coordination mechanisms." In this context, Mr. Habimana stressed the "importance of Algeria's participation in the proceedings of the upcoming session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa," scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa between next August 25 and 28, given "the pivotal role it plays in supporting health issues at the African level," as well as the qualifications it possesses that enable it to achieve new milestones, particularly in the field of eradicating a number of diseases.

Among the files also addressed during this meeting was "the completion of the process for Algeria to obtain new international certifications and recognitions in a number of health fields," "ways to provide technical support to the tropical disease control center in Tamanrasset" by "providing the necessary technical support to implement this project according to the best international standards," alongside the file of reaching maturity level 3 in the field of medicines and vaccines regulation.

In this framework, emphasis was placed on "the necessity of finalizing the adoption of the relevant regulatory texts," considering this level "an international benchmark that reflects the efficiency of the national control and regulation system and opens new horizons for strengthening the national pharmaceutical industry," according to the same source.
