Algeria and the Federal Republic of Germany maintain privileged relations based on mutual respect and a deep understanding, driven by a strong shared determination between the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his German counterpart, Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to expand the bilateral partnership across various fields to meet the aspirations of the two friendly peoples.
In this context, the official visit being conducted by the President of the Republic to Germany, starting today, Wednesday, at the invitation of his friend the German President, falls within the framework of their common desire to strengthen and deepen bilateral cooperation in all areas, given the significant potential possessed by both countries.
This visit represents a major milestone in the history of the deep-rooted relations between the two nations, particularly following the positive evolution witnessed in recent years. The scheduled talks between the President of the Republic and his German counterpart are expected to open new perspectives, creating additional opportunities for cooperation in promising sectors and elevating the partnership to the level expected by both peoples.
During the visit, the two leaders will preside over a ceremony for the signing of several agreements covering various fields.
The visit also provides an opportunity to engage in high-level political dialogue and exchange views on major international and regional issues. This occurs in a context marked by a convergence of views on several international matters, alongside Berlin's support for the pivotal role Algeria plays in establishing peace and stability in the region and the world.
Reflecting the strength of the relations and the privileged level they have reached, the President of the Republic and his German counterpart maintain regular contact and permanent consultation. Frequent phone calls between the two leaders on various occasions testify to this dynamic and consistently serve as opportunities to review the status of bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen them.
In this regard, the President of the Republic affirmed, in a congratulatory message sent to his German counterpart in February 2022 upon his reelection, his determination to pursue coordination and consultation in the service of the two friendly peoples and to consolidate cooperative relations, reiterating his full readiness to promote bilateral relations in their different dimensions.
In an interview with the German weekly Der Spiegel, the President of the Republic stated that "Germany is a model for us in many respects," praising the quality of political relations. "The Germans have always treated us with respect, and there has never been a disagreement on foreign policy," he emphasized.
For his part, the German President noted, in a congratulatory message to the President of the Republic upon his reelection for a second term in September 2024, "his country’s determination to continue intensifying bilateral relations in key areas of cooperation, such as renewable energy and the SoutH2 Corridor project for hydrogen."
In his message of greetings to the President of the Republic on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the outbreak of the glorious Revolution of Liberation, Mr. Steinmeier highlighted "the strength of the bonds that have united the two countries for many years," recalling that his country "considers Algeria a reliable partner" and will "remain by Algeria's side" in supporting joint efforts toward sustainable development and deepening cooperation.
To realize this shared political will, recent years have seen an exchange of visits between officials from numerous sectors, while economic cooperation has been bolstered through strategic projects. Most notably, the "SoutH2 Corridor" project will enable the export of green hydrogen from Algeria to Germany via Tunisia, Italy, and Austria. Additionally, cooperation has expanded into agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry, mechanical industries, and energy.
Furthermore, six German companies specializing in the automotive industry have expressed interest in the Algerian market, while more than 50 German companies are already active in Algeria across several sectors, benefiting from the significant reforms initiated by the President of the Republic to improve the investment climate.
In this perspective, an institutional twinning program was recently launched between the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, aimed at exchanging expertise to attract high-quality investments and develop the national economy across various wilayas.
