On Friday, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, continued his official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, responding to an invitation from his counterpart and friend, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Later today, the Algerian-German Economic Forum will convene in the capital, Berlin. The event will gather senior officials, prominent business leaders, and investors from both nations. The forum is expected to culminate in the signing of several agreements across promising strategic sectors, including hydrocarbons, renewable energy, energy transition, the pharmaceutical industry, manufacturing, and advanced technologies.
This initiative underscores the shared determination of both leaders to inject fresh momentum into bilateral cooperation, expanding it to broader horizons that serve the mutual interests of the two friendly nations.
President Tebboune kicked off his trip last Wednesday with a meeting with the Algerian diaspora residing in Germany. During the gathering, he instructed the government to actively address the community's concerns and support their projects. He also announced the imminent launch of a new direct flight route between Algiers and Berlin, noting that Algeria has recently acquired several new aircraft to bolster its national fleet and accommodate an expanding international flight network.
On Thursday, the President of the Republic was accorded an official reception by his German counterpart at the Borsig Palace. The two heads of state held private talks, which were later expanded to include delegations from both countries. President Tebboune also held comprehensive discussions with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Friedrich Merz.
During a joint press conference with the German Chancellor, President Tebboune emphasized that Algerian-German relations, established immediately after Algeria's independence in 1962 are "strong, positive, and have never been marred by any conflict; they are constantly improving." He highlighted that ties with Germany represent "some of the best cooperative relations Algeria currently maintains."
A joint declaration outlining a strategic agenda for bilateral partnership was officially issued. It stressed the importance of dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation in addressing global challenges. Both nations expressed their desire to deepen political, diplomatic, economic, commercial, and energy ties, boosting bilateral trade and investment for mutual economic benefit.
Furthermore, the two sides agreed to explore joint research initiatives and collaborate on emerging technologies and innovation ecosystems. They also welcomed the ongoing dialogue on regional and global security issues, including defense cooperation, counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and combating disinformation, while praising their effective cooperation regarding migration, deportation, readmission, and integration.
Concluding these diplomatic engagements, Algeria and Germany signed a Joint Declaration of Intent to cooperate on reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. Additionally, a new natural gas supply contract was signed between the Algerian state-owned energy giant Sonatrach and the German company VNG, marking a significant step that opens new horizons for energy cooperation between the two nations.
