Algerian Radio commemorates this Tuesday the 69th anniversary of the creation of the "Radio clandestine" (Secret Radio). This major event serves as a moment for Algerians to reflect on the pivotal role media played in mobilizing fighters and awakening the spirit of struggle and revolutionary resistance against malicious colonial propaganda.

Founded on December 16, 1956, on the orders of the revolutionary leadership—headed by the late Mujahid Abdelhafid Boussouf, then chief of the historical Fifth Wilaya; the Algerian clandestine radio was not merely audio broadcast over the airwaves. It stood as a revolutionary tribune adopted by fighters on the battlefield and served as a message of noble struggle perceived by supporters of the Revolution beyond Algeria’s borders.

The Battle of the Airwaves Amidst the Armed Struggle

The first words announcing the launch of the clandestine station were: "Here is the Radio of free and fighting Algeria… the voice of the National Liberation Army and the National Liberation Front speaks to you from the heart of Algeria."

These words posed a direct and major challenge to French colonialism, which was attempting by all means to stifle the Revolution.

In a short time, the radio became the media arm that helped realize the dream of the Mujahideen (freedom fighters) to defend the just Algerian cause. It revived confidence in the hearts of the fighters, thanks in large part to the remarkable contribution of the late Issa Messaoudi. His powerful voice carried the echo of the Algerian Revolution abroad, deeply influencing the Algerian people and striking fear into the camp of the colonizer.

A Medium of Revolution and Resistance

Speaking to Algerian Radio Multimedia, historian Zouheir Hammam stated that the creation of the clandestine radio was instrumental in encouraging fighters and raising awareness regarding the importance of participating in the armed struggle. Simultaneously, it countered colonial propaganda that constantly sought to minimize the impact of the Algerian Revolution.

Hammam highlighted that the radio served as a national tool for unity, strengthening the patriotic spirit across different regions of the country and transcending all barriers and borders imposed by French colonialism.

The historian added that the establishment of the clandestine radio formed the nucleus for a generation of journalists committed to national and social causes. He emphasized that this historical moment represents a symbol of resistance and media creativity in service of the nation.

Furthermore, he shed light on the importance of independent media work in bolstering unity and resilience against the challenges faced during the War of Liberation. The radio acted as a platform for comprehensive intellectual and cultural mobilization, upholding national values and preserving Algerian identity against French attempts to erase it.

An Indelible Identity

Zouheir Hammam insisted on the necessity of remembering these historical milestones by evoking the symbols of the Liberation Revolution, including the founding date of the clandestine radio.

He described this anniversary as a true starting point for all societal actors to recognize the vital role of media and the press in supporting the national movement. He also stressed that today’s technological advancements and global connectivity must be leveraged to strengthen national cohesion and preserve Algerian identity.
