The A3 group at the Security Council (Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Liberia) called on Monday in New York for all parties in Venezuela and across the international community to exercise "restraint" following recent events in the country.

"It is essential for all parties, both within Venezuela and across the entire international community, to exercise restraint and act responsibly," stated Lewis Brown, Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations (UN), speaking on behalf of the group.

It is a matter of "upholding international law by avoiding any measure likely to aggravate tensions and jeopardize regional stability," insisted the diplomat, speaking during a Security Council meeting dedicated to recent developments in Venezuela.

"The A3 express their solidarity with the people of Venezuela and reiterate the African Union's commitment to peace, stability, and mutual respect between nations and regions," he added.

He noted that the A3 remained "determined to defend the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States as provided for in the United Nations Charter, in the interest of regional stability and international peace."

These principles, Mr. Brown noted, represent the foundations of international cooperation and peaceful coexistence, recalling the importance of dialogue, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks.

"The complex situation in Venezuela requires comprehensive, inclusive efforts as well as [actions] at the national level. We continue to believe that a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the situation will only be possible within the framework of an internal dialogue in Venezuela, respecting the aspirations and rights of the Venezuelan people while relying on the constructive support of the international community," he maintained.

The diplomat indicated, however, that the members of the A3 group were monitoring the situation in Venezuela with "great concern."
