The Sudanese government, which had relocated to Port Sudan due to the conflict that erupted in 2023, is back in the capital, Khartoum, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris announced on Sunday.

"We are back today (...) the government of hope returns to the national capital," he told reporters in Khartoum, promising "better services" for residents.

The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), had forced the government to flee the capital and retreat to Port Sudan on the Red Sea, which was established as the temporary capital.

More than 3.7 million people fled the capital during the first months of the conflict when the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control.

Both the government and UN agencies had left the capital to regroup in Port Sudan, which became the provisional seat of power. Since being recaptured by the army in March 2024, Khartoum has seen the return of more than one million people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

However, after more than 1,000 days of conflict, basic services in the capital—including hospitals, airports, and power plants—remain devastated.

The UN estimates the cost of rehabilitating the infrastructure at approximately $350 million.
