Algeria was elected on Sunday in New York to the Vice-Presidency of the Bureau of the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations for the year 2026.

This development took place during the opening of the Committee's regular session.

This election reflects the confidence placed in Algeria and confirms its effective commitment and active participation in the work of this UN body.

The election is also considered a result of the attention paid by the Algerian authorities to civil society, which has come to play a growing role in the social, cultural, and economic spheres.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations is a subsidiary body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It is tasked with reviewing applications for consultative status submitted by non-governmental organizations, in addition to evaluating reports submitted by organizations that already hold this status with the Council.

It is worth noting that Algeria has been a member of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations since 2023.
