On Monday, the Minister of Interior, Local Communities, and Transport, Mr. Saïd Sayoud, held a working session with his Italian counterpart, Mr. Matteo Piantedosi, in Rome. The meeting took place as part of Mr. Sayoud’s official working visit to the Italian Republic, according to a ministry statement.
At the outset of the meeting, the Algerian Minister highlighted "the mutual keenness of both nations' leaders to elevate Algerian-Italian relations to broader horizons." He emphasized that "this positive dynamic serves as a catalyst to further expand areas of bilateral cooperation and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries."
The issue of illegal migration was a central focus of the discussions. According to the statement, "the Italian side highly commended the efforts exerted by the Algerian State in combating this phenomenon."
In this regard, Mr. Piantedosi praised Algeria’s "comprehensive and balanced approach, which integrates the humanitarian dimension of migration with related security challenges and the developmental aspects of the migration issue in Africa." He also lauded the concrete results achieved in dismantling migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks, expressing "Italy’s profound satisfaction with the current level of cooperation with Algeria in this domain."
During the session, the two ministers exchanged views on "ways to enhance security coordination and intensify operational cooperation between the competent authorities of both countries to curb illegal migration and dismantle transnational criminal networks."
In conclusion, both parties agreed to "continue expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of police collaboration, training, expertise exchange, and the development of joint operational mechanisms." The ministry's statement affirmed that these steps are designed to "further consolidate the strategic partnership between Algeria and Italy and serve the mutual interests of both nations."
