Representing the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Prime Minister, Mr. Sifi Ghrieb, participated this Saturday in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, in the session devoted to examining the report of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on the state of peace and security in Africa. The meeting was held as part of the proceedings of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit.
On this occasion, the President of the Republic addressed a message to the participants, delivered by the Prime Minister, in which he praised the efforts of the President of the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, during his chairmanship of the Peace and Security Council for the current month, as well as the important report he presented at a particularly sensitive time marked by geopolitical complexities and growing security pressures.
In his address, the President of the Republic reaffirmed Algeria’s firm position regarding the conflicts affecting the continent, reiterating its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
With regard to the Sahel region, he stressed the need to adopt a comprehensive and integrated approach that takes into account the close link between security and development, while addressing the socio-economic root causes fueling violent extremism.
On the situation in Libya, the President reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the Libyan-Libyan political process, as well as for continental and United Nations efforts aimed at reconciling the positions of the Libyan parties. He emphasized that the only solution to the crisis lies in the organization of free and transparent elections and the complete and immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, in a manner that preserves Libya’s unity and sovereignty.
Regarding the situation in Sudan, the President expressed deep regret over the humanitarian tragedy and unprecedented violations, while commending the central role of the African Union in its efforts to resolve the crisis. He also called for an immediate ceasefire and the launch of a sovereign and inclusive Sudanese-Sudanese national dialogue, capable of ending bloodshed and fulfilling the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
In the Horn of Africa region, Algeria stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States and resolving disputes through peaceful means and constructive dialogue within the framework of African Union mechanisms.
With regard to the decolonization process in Western Sahara, the President reaffirmed Algeria’s support for United Nations efforts aimed at reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions. He also emphasized the importance of continued constructive engagement in the political process under UN auspices and support for the role of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General.
Algeria also called for confronting illegitimate foreign interference, describing it as one of the main factors fueling instability and undermining conflict resolution and democratic state-building efforts across the continent.
The President of the Republic stressed that addressing these challenges requires the full operationalization of the African Peace and Security Architecture and the effective implementation of the principle of “African solutions to African problems” as a concrete and tangible reality.
