One hundred and twenty-nine journalists and media workers were killed worldwide during the year 2025, indicated the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which attributes responsibility to the Zionist entity in two-thirds of the cases.
"The (Zionist) army has now committed more targeted killings of members of the press than any other government army to date, with the overwhelming majority of those killed being Palestinian journalists and media workers in Gaza," notes the American NGO, cited Wednesday by media outlets.
After 124 deaths in 2024, the year 2025 marks, with 129 deaths, the second consecutive annual record in the 30 years that the CPJ has kept this count.
Besides the Zionist aggression on Gaza (86 journalists killed), the other deadliest conflict for the press in 2025 was Sudan with nine deaths, notes the CPJ.
"One of the striking findings of recent years is the increased use of drones," with 39 documented cases, compared to only two in 2023, according to Carlos Martinez, project manager at the "Serna" organization.
In addition to armed conflicts, organized crime was also particularly deadly for members of the press. In Mexico, six journalists were killed in 2025. Several cases were recorded in India and Peru.
"Journalists are being killed in record numbers at a time when access to information is more important than ever," laments Jodie Ginsberg, CEO of the CPJ.
"Attacks on the media are a major indicator of infringements on other freedoms, and much more must be done to prevent these killings and punish their perpetrators. We are all in danger when journalists are killed for covering the news," she adds.
Created in 1981 in New York to defend freedom of the press and journalists worldwide, the CPJ, financed by private funds and foundations, is led by a board composed of members of the press and civil society figures.
