The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, stressed that “there is no practical alternative to a peaceful settlement of the escalation in the Middle East.”
He made the remarks in an address to a meeting of the UN Security Council on Saturday night in New York, after Iran witnessed a series of explosions following U.S. and Zionist strikes.
António Guterres said that de-escalation must be achieved in full compliance with international law, including the Charter of the United Nations.
He noted that the UN Charter provides the fundamental framework for maintaining international peace and security.
While condemning the ongoing escalation, António Guterres warned that the use of force could undermine international peace and security.
He said all Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter.
He emphasized that the Charter clearly prohibits “the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” and also prohibits “any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”
António Guterres called for de-escalation, warning that “failing to do so risks a broader regional conflict,” with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.
He urged all parties “strongly” to “return immediately to the negotiating table.”
