The Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, attended the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, the world's largest international event dedicated to the telecommunications and digital technology industry, according to a ministry statement on Tuesday.
The participation of the Algerian delegation—which includes representatives from national telecommunications companies and startups specializing in messaging applications—aligns with the "state's commitment to strengthening its presence in the international technological and digital arena." It also aims to "develop strategic partnerships capable of supporting technological transformations and expanding investment and innovation opportunities within the telecommunications sector," the statement added.
During the event, Mr. Zerrouki took part in a ministerial meeting themed "Challenges of Frequency Spectrum and License Renewal for Sustainable Investment." He noted that "spectrum policy represents a sovereign, economic, and strategic decision," emphasizing that "the goal of spectrum pricing should not be limited to maximizing auction revenues but should primarily aim to strengthen digital communication and stimulate economic growth."
The Minister further explained that "high spectrum taxes are likely to delay investment in digital infrastructure, particularly regarding the deployment of 5G and 6G networks," advocating for "balanced approaches that encourage long-term investment in the sector."
