A prolific Andalusian music concert was performed on Monday evening at the "Mahieddine Bachtarzi" National Theater in Algiers by the diva of this scholarly genre, Zakia Kara Terki, before a captivated audience.
Dressed in a black silk ensemble adorned with silver rhinestones, the sweet-voiced singer, mandola in hand, intoned about fifteen M'dihs, aroubi, and other classics of Andalusian music, in the Araq, Sika, Raml El Maya, and Moual modes of the Sanâa school of Algiers and the Gharnati school of Tlemcen.
Inviting the audience on a dreamlike journey dedicated to evoking the joy of reunion, love, the celebration of others, and sharing, the artist performed pieces such as "Alguit ana khoudet," "Ma teftaker," "Ya men dara," "Koullif’tou bi badri," "Dir el oqar," and "Hanina," concluding in the ternary rhythm of the berouali with a few kh'lasset.
Immersed in the poetic lyricism of the various titles consecrated over the centuries by the great masters and poets of this scholarly music, the singer was supported by her orchestra of experienced veteran musicians. These notably included Mohamed Said Belkhier on the piano, Salim Bradaï and Djamel Kebladj on violas, Krimou on the banjo, Moulay Tidjani on the derbouka, and Kamel Si Saber on the tar.
Savoring every moment of the show with delight, the audience interacted with the singer during the recital and at the end of the evening, thanking her with rounds of applause and sustained youyous (ululations).
Long steeped in the Gharnati School of Tlemcen, Zakia Kara Terki settled in Algiers in 1978 with the sole objective of mastering the scholarly repertoire of the Sanâa School. To achieve this, she joined the "El Djazaïria El Moussiliya" association, and later, in 1980, "El Fakhardjia," where she was taught by El Hadj Hamidou Djaïdir (1923-2004).
In 1996, she formed her own orchestra and fully committed to a solo career. Since then, she has released seven albums that encompass the repertoires of both the Tlemcen and Algiers schools.
Organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Arts, the Andalusian music concert performed by Zakia Kara Terki was scheduled by the TNA (Algerian National Theater) as part of its entertainment program for the evenings of the holy month of Ramadan.
