Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Mauritanian counterpart, Mr. Mokhtar Ould Djay, emphasized on Tuesday in Algiers the determination of both countries to strengthen their fraternal relations and enhance the prospects for bilateral partnership, aiming to elevate them to the level of the aspirations of both brotherly peoples.
Co-chairing the opening of the 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian High Joint Commission for Cooperation, Mr. Sifi Ghrieb stated that cooperation and partnership relations between the two countries have reached "outstanding levels, witnessing new achievements, intensive contacts, and continuous consultation and coordination through the exchange of official visits." He noted that these efforts are guided by the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his brother, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
Mr. Sifi Ghrieb pointed out that this session convenes under "highly sensitive" regional and international circumstances characterized by growing security challenges, which require "more than ever, enhanced coordination and cooperation according to an integrated and insightful vision based on dialogue and the exchange of expertise, especially between our security services."
He recalled the cooperation agreements previously signed between Algeria and Mauritania, noting that the rapid dynamic in bilateral relations is not limited to military and security aspects but extends to other vital areas. He praised the practical steps taken to launch integrative projects, highlighting that the Algerian-Mauritanian border has become a "zone for economic integration," bolstered by the opening of two border crossings in February 2024.
Foremost among these is the strategic project for the Tindouf-Zouerate road and the commercial and industrial free trade zone project, which has "exceeded a 50% completion rate." Other projects with humanitarian and social dimensions have completed their technical studies and are set to commence soon, Mr. Sifi Ghrieb added.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Algeria's readiness to share its technical and industrial expertise to support Mauritania in enhancing its national capabilities in hydrocarbon exploration, production, and gas projects. Regarding the mining sector, he stressed that "it is time for our two countries to develop a common vision to establish mutually beneficial cooperation" and exploit their significant mineral wealth.
On the commercial front, Mr. Sifi Ghrieb noted that bilateral trade "reached approximately $352 million in 2025," emphasizing the need to increase and diversify exchanges, given the political will and the advantages of geographical proximity and the existing maritime shipping line.
For his part, Mr. Ould Djay stated that this session takes place amidst a "positive dynamic that has expanded to include various vital fields," making it a "pivotal milestone for consolidating the shared commitment to achieving tangible results." He highlighted the "strategic vision of the two leaders to push fraternal relations forward," adding that these bonds draw their strength from a constant desire to expand constructive cooperation.
The Mauritanian Prime Minister noted that the "firm wisdom and profound insight of the two leaders represent the safety valve that has enabled us to overcome the crises ravaging the region." He expressed his gratitude to Algeria for "establishing several major projects aimed at strengthening this partnership, foremost among them the strategic Tindouf-Zouerate road," highlighting its role in supporting economic integration and opening up to the African market.
