In an exclusive interview with National Radio Channel 1 yesterday, Sunday, the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Mr. Youcef Belmehdi, revealed that Algeria's relationship with the Vatican spans nearly fifty years, since Algeria officially received a Vatican delegation. However, he emphasized that these ties are much older, as Algeria has always been a cradle for successive civilizations, fostering coexistence with other religions at the highest levels.

The Minister considered that Algeria's distinguished relationship with Italy and the visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune further strengthened ties with the Vatican. During that visit, the President was warmly received by Pope Leo XIV, signifying a sincere intention to solidify this relationship and elevate the human and fraternal bonds between Algeria and the Vatican. He emphasized that Pope Leo XIV's visit to Algeria would serve as definitive proof against anyone judging the country otherwise.

Dr. Youcef Belmehdi added that Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Algeria was classified as a "State Visit," the highest rank of diplomatic visits. This reflects the immense celebration of this global figure, who represents every Christian cleric and believer worldwide. As a symbolic religious figure heading the Catholic Church, the Algerian state raised its level of readiness to the highest degree to welcome him.

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments further noted that this visit will silence many voices that have disparaged Algeria. It will also contribute to strengthening Algeria's regional and international standing as a school of moderation, temperance, and the fight against extremism.

Belmehdi emphasized that Algeria is home to 74 churches and four dioceses, noting that Christian clergy feel no marginalization or exclusion. He highlighted that, for the first time in Algeria's history, we have a Cardinal, Jean-Paul Vesco, to whom the President of the Republic granted Algerian citizenship. This demonstrates a spirit of inclusion, positive engagement, and cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, within the framework of Algerian laws that protect the religious rites of non-Muslims.

Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmehdi, concluded by stating that Algeria, through its experience in establishing peace and combating extremism, has contributed to consolidating the principle of global peaceful coexistence and building a world of security and safety. He added that the entire world will be watching for the declarations of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV from our country, and without a doubt, Algeria will emerge as a civilizational landmark, known for its peaceful people who reject violence and hatred.
