The Saharan Museum in the wilaya of Ouargla has resumed its activities and reopened its doors to the public on the occasion of Heritage Month (April 18–May 18), following a complete restoration and a meticulous scientific inventory of its various collections.
The initiative aims to enhance this cultural space and revitalize the cultural and tourism dynamics of the region, Oum El-Kheir Benzahi, head of the establishment and director of the local branch of the National Office for the Management and Exploitation of Protected Cultural Property, told APS on Monday.
She described the reopening of the museum as added value for the national heritage, citing a modern approach to museum management based on digitalization, the enhancement of collections, and the improvement of conservation and exhibition conditions to ensure the sustainability of this heritage and its accessibility to researchers and the public.
She added that the museum provides an open space to introduce Saharan heritage through permanent exhibitions and educational programs intended for schools and universities, in addition to hosting scientific activities, awareness workshops, and a handicraft exhibition.
The objective is to contribute to the promotion of cultural tourism and raise awareness about the importance of preserving historical memory and transmitting it to future generations, she noted.
Ranked among the emblematic cultural sites in the south of the country, the Saharan Museum was founded in 1938 and was classified as a national monument in 2007.
It houses varied archaeological and ethnographic collections reflecting the richness of Saharan heritage, as well as exhibition spaces including rooms dedicated to prehistory, Sedrata (Islamic vestiges), and ethnography.
