A consultative workshop was held on Tuesday in Algiers to draft Algeria’s second Voluntary National Report regarding the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. During the session, Algeria’s constant commitment to achieving these goals and strengthening its development efforts was emphasized.
The proceedings of the workshop, organized under the theme "Algeria: Toward a Sustainable and Inclusive Future," were co-chaired by the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, and the President of the National Economic, Social, and Environmental Council (CNESE), Mr. Mohamed Boukhari. The event was attended by the Advisor to the President of the Republic in charge of Economic Affairs, Mr. Farid Kourtel, along with representatives from UN agencies in Algeria, various ministerial sectors, members of both houses of Parliament, and representatives from civil society and academia.
This workshop is part of the ongoing preparations for drafting the second Voluntary National Report, which Algeria plans to present at the High-Level Political Forum scheduled for next July in New York, under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council. This forum serves as an annual platform for reviewing progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, according to explanations provided during the meeting.
In his address, Mr. Chaib reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to implementing this agenda by voluntarily integrating its goals into various public policies. He highlighted the report’s role in evaluating this process and described it as a "strategic diplomatic mechanism that is part of Algeria’s efforts to strengthen its international position and showcase its development experience based on an equilibrium between economic, social, and environmental dimensions."
He added that the report also serves as a "platform to reaffirm Algeria’s steadfast positions calling for the reform of the global governance system, the strengthening of the principle of international equity, and equitable access for developing countries to implementation means, including financing, technology, and capacity building."
For his part, Mr. Boukhari affirmed "Algeria’s resolute commitment, since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in 2015, to integrate these goals into its national policy, as evidenced by the enshrining of sustainable development principles in the 2020 Constitution and the firm political will based on action and performance efficiency."
The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Natasha Van Rijn, stated that Algeria's preparation of this report "is not merely a formality but reflects institutional and democratic maturity, as it brings together different actors in a participatory process." She noted that it "will contribute to strengthening Algeria’s position among the most advanced countries in Africa in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda."
In this context, she emphasized that Algeria’s continued strengthening of investment in human capital through support across various sectors reflects its commitment to the well-being of its citizens. She also highlighted efforts to diversify the economy and strengthen the shift toward energy transition by leveraging its potential in renewable energies while balancing development requirements with climate commitments.
Ms. Van Rijn further praised Algeria’s "strategic role" on the continent, stating that it "is not limited to its size or the strength of its institutions, but is manifested through a clear vision of a state assuming its responsibilities toward its citizens, opening itself up to international evaluation, and moving forward with determination toward the realization of sustainable development."
The Director General of the National Office of Statistics (ONS), Kamel Oukaci, indicated that this meeting is not merely a technical step but concretely embodies the participatory and comprehensive approach adopted by Algeria to evaluate public policies and measure progress toward the 2030 Agenda goals.
The workshop, organized by CNESE in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, included two sub-workshops (economic and social) aimed at enriching the debate by conveying the concerns of various actors and proposing scientific recommendations alongside in-depth academic analyses, contributing to the report's integrated scientific and practical dimension.
