The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Sudan has called for the urgent protection of journalists performing their professional duties and defending the truth amidst the ongoing conflict across several regions of the country.
In a statement posted on its official social media accounts on Sunday evening to mark World Press Freedom Day, the UN office highlighted that "journalists in Sudan face displacement, arrest, and death, yet they continue to report the truth."
The statement further noted that the persistence of these violations "silences many voices and limits access to information," urging stakeholders to "protect journalists and defend the truth and media freedom."
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has claimed thousands of lives and triggered the displacement of millions of people.
