The Algerian national swimming team won five (5) medals (1 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze) during the first day of the 17th edition of the Junior and Senior African Swimming Championships, taking place from May 5 to 10 at the aquatic center of the Miloud Hadefi Sports Complex in Oran.
The Algerian gold medal was secured by Djaouad Syoud in the 200m butterfly event, with a time of 1:00.07, ahead of his teammate Fares Ben Zidoune (1:02.47), who took the silver medal. South African swimmer Samadoun completed the podium.
The second silver medal was won by the Algerian senior 4x100m freestyle relay team, while the two bronze medals were claimed by Mohamed Sameur in the 800m freestyle, as well as the junior mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team.
This first day was largely dominated by South Africa, with seven titles, followed by Egypt (four titles). Algeria, Zimbabwe, and Uganda each won one title. A total of 14 junior and senior finals were contested.
The Algerian national team (men and women) is taking part in this edition with a squad of 50 swimmers, evenly divided between juniors and seniors (25 each).
Beyond the continental titles, the Algerian swimmers are also aiming for the qualifying standards for the 2026 World Championships. The main hopes rest on Jaouad Syoud and Hamour Abdelkrim for the men, along with Lilia Sihem Midouni and Nesrine Medjahed for the women.
Alongside this 17th edition, the event is enriched by the holding of the first edition of the Inter-zonal Championship as well as the second edition of the African Masters Championship.
Organized by the Algerian Water Sports Federation, in collaboration with Africa Aquatics and under the aegis of the Ministry of Sports, the competition brings together the African elite with approximately 450 swimmers from around forty countries.
