The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, urged continued support for the World Health Organization (WHO) to face various challenges, during its assembly held in Geneva.
In a video message addressed to the 79th World Health Assembly currently underway in Geneva, Guterres stated that this annual meeting of the assembly represents a "vital opportunity" for member states to unite and accelerate efforts to confront global health challenges, adding that "these challenges have never been so difficult."
He added that "over the past year, cuts in bilateral and multilateral aid have disrupted health systems and worsened inequalities, as clinics closed, health workers lost their jobs, prevention, surveillance, and care efforts declined, and lives were lost."
He continued by saying that "at the same time, the World Health Organization has reprioritized and adjusted its strategies while continuing to deliver services to member states, maintaining its core functions, providing technical leadership and operational support, and offering a reliable environment for convening meetings. It has also provided urgent health support in light of increasing humanitarian emergencies and given the looming health challenges."
The UN Secretary-General emphasized "the need for the World Health Organization to remain strong and independent, with ample and sustainable funding," stressing that the Assembly's work is "crucial for a healthier, safer, and fairer world."
