Algeria is participating with a joint delegation in the regional seminar of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24 or C-24), which kicked off today in Managua, Nicaragua, and will run until May 27.

The Algerian delegation includes representatives from the country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and the Algerian Embassy in Nicaragua.

This annual gathering focuses on assessing the situation in the 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories currently on the UN agenda, including the issue of Western Sahara. This year’s meeting comes at a time of heightened UN attention to the Western Sahara dossier, following recent developments since the beginning of the year.

Denis Moncada, Nicaragua's Co-Minister of Foreign Affairs, chaired the opening session of the seminar. In his address, he reaffirmed his country's steadfast commitment to the right of peoples to self-determination and expressed Nicaragua's full solidarity with all nations still struggling to achieve this right.

During the seminar, the Algerian delegation will join forces with representatives from several African, Latin American, and Asian nations to renew unwavering support for just causes. The joint efforts will focus on advocating for the inalienable right of peoples to self-determination, with particular emphasis on the Western Sahara issue.

The "Committee of 24" (C-24) is the intergovernmental UN body tasked with monitoring the implementation of Resolution 1514, which remains the founding document and cornerstone of the United Nations’ doctrine on decolonization.
