The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project constitutes a major energy corridor designed to strengthen energy security, regional economic integration, and continental cooperation, stated the Country Office Manager for the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group in Algeria, Abdoulkader Dileita.
In a statement to APS on the sidelines of the AfDB annual meetings held in Brazzaville, Mr. Dileita emphasized that "the Bank welcomes this highly integrative initiative (TSGP), which holds strong regional potential."
The official recalled that this strategic project, aimed at transporting Nigerian gas to Algeria and then to Europe via Niger, contributes to "strengthening energy security and regional integration."
The pipeline (4,130 km long with a capacity of 30 billion cubic meters) is expected to connect Nigeria's gas infrastructure to Algerian distribution networks bound for Europe, and would allow for an increase in Europe's gas supply.
The same official noted that the TSGP, designed as a true economic corridor, could strengthen cooperation among the transit countries, stimulate industrial and energy development in the regions concerned, and improve energy access for local populations.
President Tebboune Elevates the TSGP to a Strategic Link in African Development and Cooperation
Mr. Dileita highlighted that the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has elevated the TSGP to the rank of a "strategic link in continental cooperation," noting that this project is part of a broader dynamic that also includes the Trans-Saharan Highway (African Unity Road) and the Trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone.
Addressing the AfDB's commitment to these structuring projects, Mr. Dileita assured that the Bank is ready to support these large-scale endeavors, either directly or by mobilizing other financial partners around these strategic initiatives.
Mr. Dileita also insisted on the geostrategic dimension of the TSGP in the Sahelian context, considering that "the sustainable response to Sahelian crises is development," through the creation of economic opportunities, the connection of territories, and the integration of regional economies.
In this context, he emphasized that Algeria occupies a "central position" in any development and stabilization strategy for the region, highlighting its geographical position, its diplomatic weight, and its driving role in major African integration projects.
Regarding the prospects for cooperation between Algeria and the AfDB, Mr. Dileita indicated that the new Country Strategy Paper (CSP) 2025-2030, developed jointly with Algerian authorities, aims to accelerate economic diversification and regional integration through infrastructure development, particularly in the transport and energy sectors, as well as by supporting the structural transformation of the economy.
He highlighted Algeria's considerable potential in the field of renewable energies, pointing out that the country possesses "one of the largest solar resources in the world."
He also underscored the convergence of vision between Algeria and the AfDB regarding the role of infrastructure in African development and integration, viewing structuring projects as an essential lever for strengthening connectivity and supporting sustainable economic growth.
