Pedro Sanchez’s Visit to Algeria: A Major Step in Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The working and friendship visit paid to Algeria on Monday by the President of the Government of Spain, Mr. Pedro Sanchez, marked an important step in strengthening bilateral relations across all their dimensions.

During this visit, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, extended an official welcome to Algeria's guest at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, before holding a one-on-one meeting, which was subsequently expanded to include the delegations of both countries.

In a joint statement following these talks, the President of the Republic affirmed that the Spanish Prime Minister's visit to Algeria "testifies to the political will of the two friendly nations to promote their bilateral partnership, which yields proven benefits."

He stressed, in this regard, that it was "a crucial and major step in preparing for the 8th session of the Algerian-Spanish High-Level Meeting, scheduled for next autumn."

Furthermore, the President of the Republic welcomed the Spanish authorities' support for Algeria's efforts to recover embezzled funds, highlighting the "satisfactory results" achieved in this matter, which is "among the priorities."

The President of the Republic congratulated the Spanish government and people on the "deserved" triumph of their national football team, which won the 2026 World Cup against Argentina on Sunday, thereby clinching its second star.

"I believe the victory was fully deserved, given the level achieved by the Spanish sporting elite," added the President of the Republic, who shared the joy of this world title with the President of the Spanish Government during a luncheon hosted in honor of the Spanish delegation.

For his part, the President of the Government of Spain presented his sincere condolences for the victims of the fire that occurred at the assisted childhood center in Mohammadia, Algiers.

Furthermore, Mr. Sanchez reaffirmed that his country considers Algeria a "strategic partner and a friendly nation," highlighting the mutual desire of both countries to build excellent relations as part of a "new phase" of their bilateral cooperation.

Mr. Sanchez stressed that his working and friendship visit to Algeria symbolizes the "firm determination to deepen this friendship and expand future-oriented bilateral cooperation," noting that the two countries are bound by "a treaty of friendship and good neighborliness" and that "strengthening political dialogue is the foundation upon which everything is built."

In this regard, he indicated that the delegations of both countries are already working to make the 8th High-Level Meeting a "genuine success," which will allow them to "lay the necessary groundwork" to strengthen cooperation in the areas of security, the fight against irregular migration, and cultural exchanges.

On the sidelines of this visit, the President of the Republic also received, at the headquarters of the Presidency, heads of Spanish companies operating in various sectors.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss strengthening partnership prospects between Algerian companies and their Spanish counterparts, who expressed their interest in the promising investment opportunities offered in Algeria.

Furthermore, meetings took place between members of the governments of both countries.

On this occasion, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, held talks with his Spanish counterpart, Mr. José Manuel Albares, while the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, held talks with the Third Vice President of the Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Mrs. Sara Aagesen Muñoz.
