The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, took part on Tuesday via videoconference in the 12th session of the Steering Committee of National Focal Points of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the ministry said in a statement.

This annual meeting is part of the "follow-up on the implementation of decisions resulting from the 35th Summit of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa last February," the statement specified.

The proceedings of this session, held under the rotating presidency of the Republic of Uganda, were dedicated to "examining the status of the implementation of decisions and recommendations from the previous session, chaired by Algeria, as well as assessing the progress of the implementation of the Mechanism's work program." It also covered "the examination of several organizational and institutional matters aimed at strengthening the Mechanism's efficiency and consolidating its role in promoting good governance on the African continent."

In his address, Mr. Chaib, in his capacity as the APRM national focal point, reaffirmed "Algeria's firm commitment to continue supporting the reform process of this Mechanism and to strengthen its status as one of the fundamental pillars of the African governance system, capable of contributing to the consolidation of good governance principles, supporting sustainable development, and achieving the goals of Africa's Agenda 2063," the statement added.

He also highlighted "the leading role played by Algeria during its presidency of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government for the 2024–2026 period in launching the draft report on the Africa Governance Index, which was one of the main topics of discussion during this meeting."

This index represents "a strategic tool for evaluating governance performance in African countries on scientific, data-driven foundations, capable of supporting decision-making and allowing the tracking of progress made in governance at the continental scale," he specified.

In this context, he indicated that "the Algerian national report regarding this index will soon be submitted to the APRM Continental Secretariat."

At the end of his address, Mr. Chaib reiterated "Algeria's commitment, in its capacity as a member of the APRM Presidency Troika, to continue its active contribution to strengthening African cooperation, sharing its national experience and expertise, and supporting capacity-building efforts to promote good governance and African integration, and to realize the vision of 'The Africa We Want,' enshrined in the African Union's Agenda 2063," the statement concluded.
