The President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), former United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon, praised on Tuesday in Algiers the pioneering role played by Algeria in promoting sustainable development worldwide, thanks to its effective diplomacy and leadership in South-South cooperation.

During a lecture given at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, under the theme "Strengthening Partnerships for Green Growth: Responding to the Sustainability Crisis and Deepening International Cooperation in the Face of Climate Change," in the presence of state officials, Mr. Ban Ki-moon indicated that "Algeria can play an important role in sustainable development efforts, as a respected diplomatic actor, a bridge between Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean region, and a pioneer in South-South cooperation."

Indeed, "thanks to its privileged strategic position, Algeria is well-placed to promote dialogue and collective action on climate and sustainable development issues, which today transcend the simple environmental framework to assert themselves as economic, developmental, and global security issues affecting all aspects of life and all categories of society," the former United Nations Secretary-General stated.

In the same context, Mr. Ban Ki-moon praised the policies of the Algerian State aimed at preserving the environment, achieving sustainable development goals, and promoting the green economy. He highlighted its sustained efforts conducted with various international organizations, led by the United Nations, in the face of multiple challenges, notably climate change, which affects all regions of the world and brings biodiversity loss in its wake.

Mentioning the inauguration today of the Global Green Growth Institute Office in Algiers, he specified that it will contribute to coordinating efforts and harmonizing views regarding current development challenges.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lounès Magramane, reiterated Algeria's commitment to constantly work towards achieving sustainable development goals, emphasizing that issues related to climate and green growth are today at the top of the global diplomatic agenda. He added that Algeria's vision regarding sustainable development falls within the framework of an integrated project that takes into account respect for environmental standards and national sovereignty.

Addressing the solar energy and green hydrogen projects currently underway on a national scale, he affirmed that partnerships constitute the cornerstone for achieving the desired objectives in this area.

The President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the GGGI, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, who is on a visit to Algeria, was received on Monday by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who awarded him the "Athir" medal of the National Order of Merit. This was in recognition of his efforts that enabled the UN organization, during his tenure, to fulfill its missions regarding security and the fight against poverty and vulnerability.

As a reminder, Algeria joined the Global Green Growth Institute in 2025. Based in Seoul, this Institute works to strengthen the technical capacities of member states in various fields related to green growth and sustainability.
