The Algerian national football team will play for nothing less than a victory to secure its place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup when it faces Austria. The match is scheduled for the early hours of Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (03:00 Algerian time), counting for the third and final round of Group J.
In anticipation of this encounter, national team coach Vladimir Petković held a press conference on Friday evening in Kansas City, during which he confirmed that the match against Austria represents a "pivotal turning point" in Les Verts' campaign. He emphasized that his players have reached peak readiness for the clash, and that the team will enter the match with the sole intention of winning, without looking at any other calculations.
The national coach clarified, stating: "We will not play the match looking merely for a draw; rather, we will enter with a single goal, which is to achieve victory and snatch the qualification ticket." He emphasized that thinking about the identity of a potential opponent in the next round is premature.
He added that the team's focus is entirely locked on the match against Austria, and that discussing future rounds does not occupy the coaching staff or the players at the moment, as the priority remains to secure qualification first.
Petković pointed out that all the players are in peak physical and mental readiness and are fully aware of the scale of responsibility resting on their shoulders, as well as the importance of achieving a positive result that matches the ambitions of the national team and the Algerian fans.
In his assessment of the opponent, Les Verts' coach acknowledged that the Austrian team looks strong on paper due to its technical and human assets. However, he emphasized, in contrast, that such matches are decided on the pitch, which requires his players to maintain the highest levels of focus and discipline throughout the entire ninety minutes.
The coach concluded his statements by confirming that the Algerian team possesses the determination and resolve that qualify them to compete against a strong team like Austria, considering that respecting the opponent does not mean fearing them; rather, it requires delivering a great performance that leads Les Verts to achieve the desired goal and continue their journey in the 2026 World Cup.
The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups, will qualify for the Round of 32 following the conclusion of the group stage matches.
