African Union: Extraordinary Summit on Health on July 21-22 in Accra

The Ghanaian capital, Accra, will host an extraordinary African Union summit on health on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the African Union Commission. 

The summit will focus on strengthening health sovereignty, achieving universal healthcare coverage—specifically accelerating continental efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis by 2030—as well as reducing maternal mortality and expanding local pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa. 

The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, stated ahead of the summit scheduled for July 21-22: "This meeting is our opportunity to chart the course from commitment to action." 

The summit is expected to bring together heads of state and government, health ministers, policymakers, and development partners.
