The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has commended the efforts of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in his capacity as the AU Champion for the Fight Against Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa, while welcoming his continuous leadership in this field within the Union.
The PSC "congratulates the AU Champion for the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, for his steadfast leadership in advancing the AU agenda in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism," the Council stated in a communiqué released following a ministerial meeting on Tuesday dedicated to this theme.
In accordance with the African Union decision of February 2026, the PSC "invites the AU Commission to develop a continental framework to combat the use of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes, particularly drones, encrypted platforms, and digital finance, drawing on Algeria's Guiding Principles and ensuring compliance with international standards," the communiqué added.
The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, participated in this meeting via videoconference.
In his address, he recalled that the President of the Republic had, during various international events, described terrorism as the "most dangerous scourge" and an "absolute evil" that threatens the continent's stability and undermines developmental achievements realized through great efforts.
Quoting the President of the Republic, Mr. Attaf added that this scourge weakens state institutions, deepens crises, and, above all, obstructs Africa's legitimate progress toward stability and development.
