United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the creation of a UN commission to address the "human control" of artificial intelligence (AI).
"Science informs, but humans decide. Our goal is to make human control a technical reality, not a slogan," said Mr. Guterres before the Global AI Summit, which concludes on Friday in New Delhi.
He announced the formation of a commission of 40 international scientists "to complete our knowledge on AI and assess its real effects on economies and societies so that all countries, regardless of their AI capacity, have the same clarity."
"If we want AI to serve humanity, our policy cannot be based on guesses, hype, or misinformation. We need facts that we can trust and share," insisted Mr. Guterres.
"When we understand what systems can and cannot do, we can take steps to put in place smarter, risk-adapted safeguards," he continued.
"We are racing into the unknown. AI-related innovation is moving at the speed of light and outpaces our collective capacity to understand it, let alone govern it," insisted the UN chief.
"The message is simple: less hype, less fear, more facts and evidence," he concluded.
The fourth of its kind, the New Delhi summit brings together political leaders and the entire "tech" elite to examine the impact of AI. A joint declaration is expected later in the day.
