Athlete Zahra Tatar won Algeria's first gold medal in the hammer throw event at the African Athletics Championships for seniors, currently held in Accra, Ghana, from May 12 to 17.
In addition to holding the African title, Tatar also holds the Algerian national record in the hammer throw with a mark of 70.82 meters, achieved in 2025 under the guidance of her coach, Hakim Toumi.
Algeria is represented in the Accra meet by 10 athletes. Besides Tatar, the squad includes Mehdi Rouana (pole vault), Younes Ayachi (high jump), Mohamed Ali Gouaned (800m), Diaa Boudoumi (decathlon), and Tarek Hussein (long jump). The walking events feature Ismail Benhammouda, Souad Azzi, Melissa Touloum, and Sohail Abderrahmane Aloui.
The African Championship is considered the most prestigious continental competition in athletics, bringing together Africa's elite athletes across various disciplines, including sprints, long distances, and relays.
The 2026 edition holds special significance as it is being hosted for the first time in Ghana, specifically at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, located in the capital, Accra.
