We are just a few days away from the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), declared on February 27, 1976, by the Polisario Front following Spain's withdrawal from the territory of Western Sahara.

It has thus been five decades that the Sahrawi people have continued to resist and aspire to self-determination in accordance with international law.

Mr. Said Ayachi, President of the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS), speaking this morning on Algerian Radio's Channel II on this occasion, emphasized: "As you know, the file is in the hands of the United Nations, and the latest Security Council resolution, 2697, continues to recognize the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination." He specified that this same international law "recognizes the right of all colonized peoples to freely choose their destiny through a self-determination referendum."

Said Ayachi also recalled that it was based on the principle of the self-determination referendum that the Polisario Front, the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, signed the ceasefire agreement in September 1991.

In this same context, the radio guest noted that, since the anniversary date of February 27 falls in the middle of the month of Ramadan this year, the festivities for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the SADR's proclamation have been scheduled for April 7 to 9, 2026.
