The Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, participated in a high-level meeting in Barcelona, Spain, regarding the governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of telecommunications. This took place on the sidelines of his participation in the Mobile World Congress (MWC), according to a ministry statement released this Wednesday.
In his intervention during this meeting, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the GSM Association (GSMA), the Minister reviewed Algeria’s efforts to "strengthen its position as a regional technological hub and a link between Europe, Africa, and Arab countries."
He highlighted that this is being achieved through "investments in telecommunications infrastructure, the accelerated deployment of 5G networks, and the development of a national AI ecosystem," alongside the "launch of the National Cybersecurity Strategy for the next five years."
In this context, Zerrouki stated that "the real challenge in the field of Artificial Intelligence is primarily institutional," and that the governance of this technology constitutes "a fundamental factor in ensuring it serves as an engine for economic progress and digital inclusion."
The Minister also pointed out on this occasion that building trust and establishing clear governance frameworks for AI are "essential conditions for enabling innovation and ensuring the contribution of this technology to economic and social development."
