ANNABA – The Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, praised on Tuesday in Annaba the ongoing efforts to list the Augustinian routes as World Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In a statement to the press on the sidelines of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Hippo archaeological site, the Minister noted that this route constitutes "a strategic project for the State, which aims to enhance national heritage, further promote Algeria's cultural influence, and develop cultural tourism by making this site a destination for researchers and enthusiasts of Augustinian thought from around the world."

Ms. Bendouda also emphasized the importance of "strengthening international academic cooperation" and "developing scientific research and documentation related to this heritage to ensure its sustainability and its transmission to future generations."

The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Culture and Arts sector to continue supporting initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting national heritage, turning it into a lever for cultural and tourism development, and a bridge for strengthening dialogue between civilizations and anchoring the values of peace.

The Augustinian routes include the archaeological sites of Hippo in the Wilaya of Annaba, as well as those of Taghaste and Madaure in the Wilaya of Souk Ahras, all of which are linked to the life and history of Saint Augustine.
