The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, visited several facilities and infrastructures within the fishing sector in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. This included the Port of Tanit, which is set to host Algerian fishing vessels to exploit the fishery resource quota agreed upon by the two nations under the cooperation protocol for fisheries, the maritime economy, and aquaculture, according to a ministry communiqué released yesterday, Sunday.

During the visit, which aims to activate the cooperation protocol signed during the 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian Great Joint Commission held recently in Algeria, Mr. Oualid was accompanied by Mohamedou Ould M'haimid, the Mauritanian Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty. The delegation visited the Port of Tanit, where seven Algerian fishing vessels are expected to dock soon to exploit the agreed-upon quota of fishery resources, estimated at 31,120 tonnes, the source added.

The minister’s visit took place on the sidelines of his participation in the 34th session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Conference for Africa (ARC34), held in Nouakchott.

On this occasion, Mr. Oualid, along with shipowners involved in the implementation of the bilateral agreement, inspected "the infrastructure and logistical equipment of the Port of Tanit dedicated to the reception and packaging of fishery production, as well as the capacities offered by the brotherly nation of Mauritania in the fishing sector." He emphasized that "this agreement will open broad prospects for investors from both countries to strengthen economic cooperation."

According to the communiqué, the visit also featured meetings with professionals from the Mauritanian fishing sector, members of the National Fisheries Federation (FNP), and all stakeholders involved in implementing the bilateral cooperation agreement in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture.
