The inaugural edition of the Afro-Mediterranean Thought Meetings will be held from April 28 to 30 in Algiers and the wilaya of Tipaza, aiming to highlight the legacy of Saint Augustine and its human and civilizational dimensions, the Ministry of Culture and Arts announced in a statement on Thursday.

The official opening ceremony of this event, organized under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will take place on April 28 at the archaeological site of the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania in Tipaza. Activities will continue on April 29 and 30 with intellectual and scientific gatherings at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers.

This annual cultural and intellectual event aims to "consolidate Algeria's position as a natural and civilizational link between the African continent and the Mediterranean space, at a time when cultural dialogue has become a necessity in the face of identity withdrawal and contemporary challenges," the same source specified.

This first edition will feature the participation of official delegations and prominent international figures from the cultural and diplomatic fields, alongside an elite group of thinkers and academics from Africa and Europe, as well as renowned Algerian researchers and intellectuals, according to the statement.

The meeting also aspires to highlight the legacy of the philosopher Augustine—born in Souk Ahras (formerly Thagaste) and deceased in Annaba (formerly Hippo)—as an African figure shaped by the Mediterranean who became a major reference in universal thought and a bridge between local and universal values.

Through specialized scientific themes, these meetings intend to offer a contemporary and critical re-reading of the Augustinian legacy, capturing its values and reviving its human and civilizational dimensions, while analyzing Augustine's triple belonging (Algerian, African, and Mediterranean) and the influence of his cultural environment on the development of his universal thought.
