The Algerian national U20 wrestling team concluded its participation in the African Championship held in Egypt, securing third place with a total of 17 medals (2 gold, 13 silver, and 2 bronze).
The host country, Egypt, took the lead with 25 medals (19 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze), followed by Tunisia in second place with 6 medals (4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).
During the second and final day of the competition, the national squad clinched eight medals (1 gold, 6 silver, and 1 bronze). On the first day, they secured 9 medals (1 gold, 7 silver, and 1 bronze). Algeria's gold medal on the final day was won by Bilal Benzemim (70 kg) in the freestyle discipline.
In the same discipline, the national elite earned 6 silver medals through Abderrezak Chenini (57 kg), Abdelghani Aid (61 kg), Radouane Sissaoui(65 kg), Kamel Harizi (97 kg), and Mohamed Yazid Ouaiss (74 kg) in the men's category. In the women's category, Yasmine Bouregba(72 kg) took silver, while Fatima Zahra Bouchibi (55 kg) claimed the bronze.
These results add to the first day's tally, where Badr Edine Mahdaoui (55 kg) won gold in Greco-Roman wrestling. Seven silver medals were also secured in the same discipline by Adel Fekkas (60 kg), Zakaria Housini (63 kg), Abderrezak Bahlouli (72 kg), Abderrahmane Bouguerra (87 kg), Iskander Ben Mohamed (97 kg), Moncef Bendjeroud (130 kg), and Bachir Bouchibi (67 kg). Additionally, Melissa Boussaidi(62 kg) won a bronze medal in the women’s competition.
The U17 national team had also concluded its competition on Wednesday with 14 medals, including six golds, placing Algeria second in the overall team rankings for that category—a clear indication of the rising level of Algerian wrestling on the continent.
The Algerian delegation is participating with 53 wrestlers across various age groups (U17, U20, and Seniors) in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women's wrestling, with high ambitions to continue winning titles and raising the national flag in this African event.
