African Wrestling Championship: Algeria bags 11 medals, including 3 gold

The Algerian national wrestling team (men and women) secured eleven medals (3 gold, 7 silver, and 1 bronze) in the Greco-Roman wrestling events at the 2024 African Championship, held this Friday in Alexandria, Egypt. 

The gold medals were claimed by Badr Edine Mahdaoui (55 kg), Abdeljebbar Djebbari(63 kg), and Fadi Rouabah (97 kg). The silver medals were won by Abdelkrim Fergat (60 kg), Fayçal Benferadj (67 kg), Abdelmalek Merabet (72 kg), Chawki Doulache (77 kg), Haithem Issaad (82 kg), Bachir Sid Azara, and Djamila Achouak Tekouk (57 kg).

The Algerian tally was further bolstered by a bronze medal won by Chaimaa Chebila, who finished third in the women's under-53 kg category. Notably, Badr Edine Mahdaoui stood out by clinching his second gold medal in the senior category, following his U20 gold medal victory on Thursday.

The senior events were preceded by the U17 and U20 categories, which took place during the first four days of the championship.

The national team began its participation by winning 14 medals in the U17 category (6 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze), followed by 17 medals in the U20 category (2 gold, 13 silver, and 2 bronze).

Algeria is participating in this continental event with a delegation of 53 wrestlers across various age groups (U17, U20, and Seniors), competing in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women's wrestling disciplines.
