The President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, affirmed that the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Algeria was successful and constituted a significant milestone for strengthening relations between Algeria and the Vatican.
During his periodic interview with representatives of the national press, broadcast Saturday evening on national television and radio channels, the President of the Republic explained that his talks with the Pope primarily focused on bilateral relations. Both parties agreed to establish “permanent” and “mutually enriching” relations.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Pope for this visit, which was “marked by remarkable moments,” including the Pope walking “on foot among the crowds and shaking hands with them.”
The President of the Republic of Algeria mentioned that Pope Leo XIV “is fully and precisely aware of what is happening in Algeria, which has personally made me very comfortable with him.”
In this regard, he pointed out that the Pope is “well-informed about the cultural efforts exerted by Algeria." Responding to a question regarding allegations that the Pope carried messages from certain European leaders, the President added that Algeria's guest is above matters that do not rise to the level of the distinguished bilateral relations.
In this regard, the President added that respecting the other also requires respecting their freedom, and that Pope Leo XIV stands in support of this principle.
