The General Assembly of Alava province, in northern Spain, approved a motion supporting the right to self-determination of Western Sahara, Spanish media reported on Monday.

The motion regarding the self-determination of the Sahrawi people was submitted to the Alava Assembly on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), stated the news website Zuk.eus.

"On this 50th anniversary, we reaffirm that defending the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people is not only a historical issue, but a political and ethical responsibility," stated June Mugica, the elected official representing the political coalition EH Bildu, during the debates, as noted by the Spanish media outlet.

"The adopted text asserts not only the right to self-determination but also the permanent sovereignty of the Sahrawi people over their natural resources," the website specified.

The motion "urges Morocco to leave the Sahrawi territory (...) and to put an end to practices such as persecution, threats, reprisals, deprivation of liberty, or the expulsion of activists and members of civil society."

The signatories of the motion expressed their "concern over the situation of Sahrawi political prisoners and call on Spain and the European Union not to support activities contrary to international law."

The text urges the Spanish government to promote, within the European Union and the United Nations, political and diplomatic initiatives to end the occupation of the Sahrawi territory and to advance toward a just and definitive solution in accordance with the UN-sponsored Peace Plan.
