The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU) reaffirmed on Monday evening its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian people and its dedication to the centrality of the Palestinian cause for the Arab Nation, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 78th anniversary of the Nakba (May 15, 1948).
In a press release signed by its president, Mr. Ibrahim Boughali, the APU denounced the continuation of Zionist violations against the Palestinian people, notably the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, colonization in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as crimes targeting civilians, the destruction of infrastructure, and forced displacements.
The press release recalled that the Nakba had led to the displacement of more than 750,000 Palestinians and the destruction of hundreds of Palestinian villages and towns, stressing that this historical tragedy continues today under various forms of occupation and discrimination.
Furthermore, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union reaffirmed its support for the right of the Palestinian people to recover all of their legitimate and inalienable rights, notably the right of return in accordance with Resolution 194, the right to self-determination, and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Al-Quds as its capital.
The APU also called on the international community, the Security Council, and the United Nations General Assembly to assume their responsibilities to end the occupation and ensure international protection for the Palestinian people. It also urged regional and international parliamentary bodies to intensify pressure for the implementation of resolutions of international legitimacy.
Finally, the Union affirmed that a just and comprehensive peace cannot be achieved without an end to the occupation and the exercise, by the Palestinian people, of full sovereignty over their land.
