The National Agency for Health Security, represented by its president, Mr. Kamel Sanhadji, is participating, starting this Monday, in the activities of the 79th session of the World Health Assembly, held in Geneva (Switzerland), according to a statement from the agency.

The same source explained that "affirming its commitment to enhancing international health cooperation and representing Algeria in global forums related to health security, the National Agency for Health Security, represented by its president, Professor Kamel Sanhadji, begins its participation as part of the official Algerian delegation in the events of the 79th World Health Assembly, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to 23."

This session, as the statement pointed out, constitutes "a prominent international gathering for member states tasked with examining global health priorities, according to the axes listed on the agenda, namely: ensuring health, protecting and promoting health, as well as energizing and improving performance."

Within the framework of the "ensuring health" axis, the proceedings will specifically address "renewing the commitment to accelerate progress toward eliminating malaria, alongside a number of issues considered by the Executive Board. These include the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, mental health, and communicable diseases, including the Immunization Agenda 2030, as well as the strategy to end tuberculosis."

Discussions will also touch on the topics of "universal health coverage, primary health care, and health within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, substandard and falsified medical products, and the updated draft of the global action plan to combat antimicrobial resistance. This is in addition to standardizing regulatory approaches, governance, and standards related to data, digital health, and artificial intelligence in the health sector."

As for the "protecting health" axis, the session will address—according to the same source—"issues of public health emergencies, preparedness, and response, the report of the Independent Oversight and Advisory Committee for the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, and the implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005), as well as the work related to the WHO pandemic agreement."

In addition to the aforementioned, the discussions will include "the organization's work in health emergencies, strengthening the evidence base underpinning public health and social measures, as well as polio."

In the context of the "promoting health" axis, the proceedings will revolve around "strengthening rehabilitation in health systems, promoting well-being and health, the outcome of the work of the WHO Commission on Social Connection, the health of indigenous peoples, and maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, in addition to the draft strategy regarding the economics of health for all."

The General Assembly will also consider "the health situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan," the statement adds.

Within the framework of the "energizing and improving performance" axis, the proceedings will touch on "a number of issues related to budget, transformation, administration, legal affairs, and governance."

It is worth noting that the participation of the National Agency for Health Security in this international meeting falls within the framework of "Algeria's keenness to keep pace with international trends and discussions related to health security, enhance the resilience of health systems, prevent health risks, and prepare for emergencies." It also reflects "the agency's commitment to cooperation, exchanging expertise, and monitoring international developments, in a way that supports more coordinated, effective, and equitable health efforts," according to the same source.
