The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mourad Adjal, highlighted on Monday afternoon in Biskra Algeria's ambition to become a major hub for electricity exports, citing its significant potential and production surplus.

Speaking during the inauguration of a 200-megawatt peak (MWp) photovoltaic plant in the municipality of Leghrous, accompanied by the Wali of Biskra, Mr. Lakhdar Sedas, the Minister stated that Algeria "has become a key energy player across the African continent and is well-qualified to export large quantities of electricity." He added that the "country's high authorities aim for long-term production exceeding 15,000 MW for export purposes."

Mr. Adjal noted that "the first phase of this endeavor, launched two years ago, targets the production of 3,200 MW." He emphasized that the photovoltaic plants in Leghrous (Biskra) and Tendla (El Meghaier), which together produce 400 MWp and were inaugurated today, are part of this phase outlined in the program of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In the same context, the Minister revealed that "work is underway with African and European partners to implement a submarine cable project for the export of large quantities of this energy."

Discussing the importance of such projects, the Minister emphasized that these plants "are a vital addition that strengthens the national electrical system, contributes to the production of exportable green energy, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions." He also noted that they limit the use of fossil fuels, thereby saving significant quantities of natural gas to be redirected for export.

Regarding the ministry's program for grid connection, Mr. Adjal stated that the province of Biskra has achieved a "qualitative leap," with more than 13,000 out of 16,000 agricultural farms connected to electricity. The province has reached a coverage rate of nearly 90%, exceeding the national average of 75%.

The Minister also pointed out that Biskra possesses an energy capacity exceeding 1,280 MVA, only 51% of which is currently utilized, reflecting energy self-sufficiency in the province. He reaffirmed that Sonelgaz's continuous field efforts focus on addressing shortcomings and strengthening networks in coordination with local authorities.
