The Ministry of Culture and Arts has expressed its strong condemnation and categorical rejection following the "isolated incident and heinous attack" that targeted the Algerian pavilion during "Africa Week" at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on May 20, 2026.
The Ministry stated that this irresponsible behavior, which is entirely contrary to the values of dialogue and rapprochement promoted by UN bodies, will not deter Algeria from continuing its distinguished civilizational mission. In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the Ministry added that the steadfastness of Algerian artisans and exhibitors in representing their country proves that Algerian cultural identity is protected, first and foremost, by its authenticity and the vigilance of its people.
In this context, the Ministry of Culture and Arts emphasized the following points:
- Full Diplomatic Coordination: The Ministry provides absolute support for all legal and administrative measures initiated by the Embassy of Algeria in France to prosecute those responsible for this transgression within the UNESCO compound.
- Protection of National Heritage: Desperate attempts to disrupt Algeria’s cultural presence clearly reflect an inability to counter the successive victories achieved by Algeria in registering its tangible and intangible heritage, the most recent being the official adoption of the "Costume of the Great Algerian East" (Caftan, Qat, and Lihaf) file.
- Continued Activities: The Algerian pavilion will continue to welcome visitors during Africa Week until May 22, presenting an image befitting Algeria’s historical depth and rich traditions. The true response will be through excellence and creativity, both digitally and on the ground.
The Ministry of Culture and Arts values the widespread wave of solidarity from the national community and intellectuals, and calls on the media and content creators to continue highlighting the beauty and uniqueness of Algerian cultural heritage with a responsible and balanced discourse that reflects the prestige and status of state institutions.
