The Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Ms. Kaoutar Krikou, received the Mauritanian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Ms. Messouda Baham Mohamed Laghdaf, and the Portuguese Secretary of State for the Environment, Mr. João Manuel Esteves, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and partnership in the sector, according to a ministry statement.

The two meetings took place on Saturday at the ministry’s headquarters, following their participation in the International Meeting on Biodiversity held in Algiers, coinciding with the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on May 22.

The meeting between Ms. Krikou and her Mauritanian counterpart provided an opportunity to review ongoing efforts to implement the recently concluded Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries in the environmental sector. Discussions highlighted key projects and practical axes included in the joint action plan, particularly regarding the circular economy and the management and valorization of various types of waste.

Both parties also addressed the consequences of climate change and ways to tackle them, especially the phenomenon of desertification, which represents a common challenge for both nations. They touched upon Algeria’s pioneering experience with the Green Dam project, which was relaunched in 2023 under the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Furthermore, the meeting explored prospects for enhancing and valuing biodiversity and developing the use of modern digital facilities and solutions in environmental management.

Regarding the meeting with the Portuguese Secretary of State for the Environment, it served as an opportunity to review the experiences of both countries in the fields of environmental protection. The talks also explored the prospects for signing a Memorandum of Understanding between Algeria and Portugal in the environmental sector, strengthening cooperation in implementing environmental projects, and exchanging expertise and best practices, the statement concluded.
